The Heart of the Matter:
God always measures the heart. We would be wise to do so as well, especially in today’s perilous times. The pressing issues of today are certainly not new but they certainly are intensifying. The ultimate resolution can only occur if we collectively pursue and accept the truth on the main cause, the heart of the matter.
As a Bible believing Christian, I always refer to the Bible for truth. We cannot get to the heart of the matter without truth. Jesus very clearly stated in John 14:6, “I am the way and the truth and the life: no one comes to the Father but through me.” You simply cannot know truth without knowing Jesus. I know to some that may sound harsh and arrogant and even offensive; however, it would only be harsh, arrogant and offensive if untrue.
To further emphasize the importance of knowing Jesus and relying upon God for truth to discover the heart of the matter, God has provided wisdom to us in the heart of the Bible. The very center verse of the Bible, the very heart of the Bible can be found in Psalm 118:8. Psalm 118 is the middle chapter of the entire Bible. The Bible has 594 chapters before Psalm 118 and 594 chapters after Psalm 118. If you add up all the chapters except Psalm 118 you get a total of 1188 chapters. 1188 or Psalm 118 verse 8 is the very middle verse the very heart of the entire Bible. So, what does the very heart of the Bible say, “It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man.”
The dictionary defines the term refuge as finding shelter or protection from danger or distress. So, what does it mean to take refuge in the Lord? In Psalm 34 the Bible says, “The Lord redeems the soul of his servants and none of those who take refuge in Him will be condemned. The righteous cry and the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. Many are the afflictions of the righteous but the Lord delivers him out of them all.” Psalm 91 says, “My refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust. And under his wings you may seek refuge.”
When we seek refuge in the Lord we no longer trust in man and rely upon man for protection or for providing solutions from danger or distress from this world. Man simply cannot provide answers to problems that man himself has created. Man in his own power, without taking refuge in the Lord, can only cause more strife and distress. That is exactly what is occurring in today’s world. The politicians, the media, celebrities, professional athletes and the “woke” crowd are taking refuge in themselves and leading the charge. The blind, the lost and the unbelievers are heavily influencing our culture today in an attempt to solve the complex and chronic issues we face in this country. Collectively they are unfortunately only intensifying the problems. As stated earlier, the only solution is to take refuge in the Lord rather than trust in man.
So, what does that mean for us believers? Well first of all we need to be reminded that this is not our real home. We are to live in this world but we are not to be of it. We are to embrace the Lord, trust in the Lord and take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. We are to be that shining light on the hill. We are to pray without ceasing. We are to endure and persevere. Keep your eyes focused on the Lord, for the victory is ours and the battle has been won. Take refuge in the Lord for his lovingkindness is everlasting. How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him. Do not be discouraged. The world’s problems will always be present as we live in a fallen world, however, when we believers collectively take refuge in the Lord, we are doing the Lord’s will; and there is no better place to be than in His will.
